In October 2018, Sharp Corporation obtained 80.1 per cent of Toshiba’s computer business, then known as Toshiba Client Solutions. As part of the transition from Toshiba to Sharp, the dynabook brand came into existence in April 2019. The acquisition bought not only the brand, but also the people, along with Toshiba’s former design centre, manufacturing facilities and local offices.
In August 2020, Sharp acquired the remaining 19.9 per cent of shares making dynabook a solely Sharp owned company.
Toshiba launched the world’s first commercial laptop in 1985, and went on to create many world firsts, including the first integrated hard drive, first CD drive, and even first colour laptop display, which are seen as commonplace in the laptop space today.
It is built on the foundation of Toshiba’s 35-year heritage in mobile computing, Sharp’s technology and wider digital office solutions, while at the same time reinforcing the significant procurement and manufacturing capabilities of Foxconn, the owner of both dynabook and Sharp.
