Sharp Energy Solutions Europe's Glass Glass NB-JD PV-panels have achieved a significant milestone by securing the esteemed ‘Classe Uno’ certification for fire safety in Italy.
Fire safety is of paramount importance in Italy, and the nation's specific regulations are known to be stringent, surpassing even European Union standards. Italy's UNI 9177 fire protection regulation enforces the strict fire safety requirements prescribed by building authorities.
Under these regulations, only PV panels in fire class 1 are permitted for installation without the need for further inspection of the roofing materials used. Any other PV modules require an additional layer of class 1 fire-resistant material underneath them.
In a comprehensive evaluation carried out by Italy's renowned testing institute, CSI S.p.A., Sharp NB-JD Glass Glass panels were subjected to rigorous testing protocols as outlined in UNI9177. The outcome of this assessment has elevated these panels to the highest possible classification—Class 1—as a reflection of their exceptional fire resistance characteristics.
The testing, which was carried out in accordance with the UNI9174 standard, involved exposing the modules to intense heat radiation and ignition sources. The parameters assessed included flame propagation, ignition speed, dripping behaviour, afterglow and material flammability as set out in UNI8457.
Italian solar installers really favour PV panels endorsed with the UNI9177 fire class 1 certification, as it streamlines the compliance process with PV installation building codes in the country.
Simon Betka, Country Manager for Sharp Energy Solutions Italy, expressed his pride in the successful fire resistance testing, saying, “The results of this rigorous fire safety assessment underscore the commitment of Sharp Energy Solutions Europe to upholding the highest standards of quality and safety in our photovoltaic modules. Our goal is to consistently deliver products of the highest quality that meet the stringent fire safety requirements by achieving the coveted fire safety Class 1 designation. By minimising the risk of fire reactions, Sharp's modules not only simplify installation work but also guarantee safety throughout the lifetime of the PV system.”
